The True Story of a Freelance Artist

Posted on Mar 4, 2010 in Blog | No Comments

A freelancer from L.A. has posted his experience regarding an unfortunate situation he had encountered with a production studio. He explains what he did that saved him in the end.

For anyone who freelances for a living or even as a side job, whether you’re a designer, a writer, or a photographer, attempting to take advantage of the ‘little guy’ is wrong. I for one can relate to this situation. I’ve learned that having a written contract or agreement on paper or email before working for your client is an important safety net. It’s unfortunate to hear that some companies still have the nerve to take such action thinking they’re superior to others. I’ve always believed in karma, and that good things will happen to nice people. In the words of Conan O’Brien on his last show on the Tonight Show: “Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen”.

This article may prove to be useful for those who walk the same path as a freelancer. In the end, this particular freelancer had won the case in court. But his main goal for writing this wasn’t to badmouth the studio he had worked for, but to send an awareness to those who station themselves from a similar standpoint. To the anonymous freelancer: thanks for sharing.
